Paul Buentello Not Officially Cut From UFC, But Camp Anticipates Release
Posted by: | Comments
Paul Buentello (27-12 MMA, 3-3 UFC) has not received his official UFC release, but his representative is preparing for the worst.
“We’ve had discussions with the UFC about moving forward with Paul,” Ellis Pacheco, Buentello’s manager, told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) today. “Have we received any paperwork? No.”
Buentello dropped his second consecutive UFC fight when he met Cheick Kongo at UFC on Versus 1 in March.
In a one-sided affair, Kongo dominated the fight on the ground before Buentello submitted unexpectedly in the third round. His cornerman, Trevor Wittman, later confirmed the former heavyweight contender had suffered a dislocated finger in the fight’s first round and was unable to continue due to the pain of the injury.
“It was very frustrating because of how well Paul had done in training camp with takedown defense and wrestling,” Pacheco said. “He had lost 26 pounds for the fight.”
The UFC’s official Web site still lists Buentello on its heavyweight roster.

White Says “We’d Love To Take” Shields, Plays Coy Regarding Emelianenko
Posted by: | Comments
While the UFC will remain firmly in the MMA spotlight for the next 10 days with two more shows on the horizon, that focus will briefly shift in April for Strikeforce’s second-ever CBS-broadcast event.
Headlining the April 17 “Strikeforce: Nashville” card is Strikeforce middleweight champ Jake Shields as he meets former UFC star Dan Henderson.
Following Sunday night’s post-UFC on Versus 1 press conference, UFC president Dana White said he’s not very fond of the matchup, but he is keeping an eye on Shields.
“Dan Henderson is fighting [expletive] Jake Shields,” White said to MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). “Come on. Are you serious? Jake Shields is 170 pounds, and he’s their (185-pound) champion.
“And I just found out today that they’re running commercials on [CBS], and the commercials are like three seconds, and it basically says, ‘MMA legend Dan Henderson,’ and he hits a heavy bag, I guess, and looks back at the camera. That’s the [expletive] commercial. How about, ‘Jake Shields is our [expletive] champion’?”

Fitch & Alves: A Rematch 4-Years In The Making
Posted by: | Comments
It was June 2006 when Jon Fitch and Thiago Alves last met in the Octagon. The result was Fitch winning his third fight in the UFC with a vicious up-kick followed by punches, and the American Kickboxing Academy fighter had arguably one of the biggest wins of his young career.
Fast forward almost four years later, and Fitch and Alves are ranked almost unanimously by every voting panel as the top two welterweights in the sport behind Georges St-Pierre. They are finally about to step in the cage again, with both hoping to get another shot at the gold.
Fitch says he actually promised Alves a rematch in November of 2007 after the Brazilian got “Fight of the Night” honors for a win over Chris Lytle. Now it’s finally about to happen.
“I promised him that night I’d give him a rematch,” Fitch said. “At the time it was I was promising I was going to win the belt and I was going to give him a rematch as champion, but it didn’t work out that way. I’m happy to be able to give him a rematch now.”

Shane Carwin “Win Or Lose I Will Be Ready For War!”
Posted by: | Comments
At UFC 111, Shane Carwin faces his toughest test in his MMA career thus far when he takes on former Champ Frank Mir for the UFC interim Heavyweight Championship.
For Carwin, the fight against Mir is make or break…
“This fight with Frank is my career balled up into 25 minutes. If I beat Frank I answer questions about who I am and what I can do in this sport. If I don’t I am just another heavyweight in a sea of great fighters. “
Carwin is a refreshingly honest fighter, totally devoid of bullshit and bravado, Carwin has a no-nonsense approach that most fighters would do well to mimick…
“Thank you to the supporters and fans that will tune in to watch this fight. Win or Lose I guarantee you I will be ready for a war. I have trained harder then I have before, I have sacrificed my mind and body for this opportunity and honestly I can’t wait to release this built up pressure and aggression on Frank.”

James Toney Signs Multi-Fight Contract With The UFC
Posted by: | CommentsFormer Middleweight, Super Middleweight and Cruiserweight world boxing champion James Toney has signed a multi-fight agreement with the UFC.
After calling Dana White a “Ho” a week or so ago, many people thought Toney’s flirtation with the world’s biggest MMA organisation was over with but it seems that talks never really came to the grinding halt that we thought they did.
Quite how the UFC plan to use Toney is anyone’s guess but it wouldn’t surprise me if he’s thrust into a UFN headliner against Kimbo Slice.
