UFC 113’s Matt Mitrione Says Forget What You Think You Know About Him “Kimbo Slice”
Posted by: | Comments
Matt Mitrione knows a thing or two about being pigeonholed, and he’s not about to do that to UFC 113 opponent and fellow “The Ultimate Fighter 10″ veteran Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson.
Mitrione got a reputation on the Spike TV series as a difficult-to-work-with brooder that rubbed his teammates the wrong way. Ferguson already had a reputation as an MMA greenie made famous by the good fortune of YouTube.
It’s a sport full of people with hot air, Mitrione says, and nothing is worse than taking a competitor at face value.

In fact, he’ll actually be in the main event.
Following Saturday night’s “WEC 48: Aldo vs. Faber” post-event press conference, White told a small group of reporters that the upcoming Silva vs. Chael Sonnen fight at UFC 117 in Oakland, Calif., would serve as the night’s featured contest.

Dana White Says UFC Still Coming To Oakland Just Lukewarm On Hawaii
Posted by: | Comments
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – While the WEC’s first-ever pay-per-view event is the current focus for UFC president Dana White, the continued global expansion of the company’s primary brand is always on his mind.
On Thursday, White confirmed that Salt Lake City will host UFC on Versus 2 on Aug. 1, but he also confirmed that the city originally expected to host that event, Oakland, Calif., still will get a visit from the UFC this year.
However, White seemed less optimistic that a long-rumored trip to Hawaii is in the promotion’s immediate plans.

Dana White Says WEC’s Lightweight Division Eventually Headed To UFC
Posted by: | Comments
Although World Extreme Cagefighting officials have long touted the benefits of having their own lightweight division – the only weight class that overlaps with its sister promotion, the Ultimate Fighting Championship – a change could be on the way.
In a recent interview with USA Today’s Sergio Non, UFC president Dana White said the WEC’s 155-pound weight class “eventually” will be folded into the bigger promotion.
The division is currently ruled by top prospect and champ Benson Henderson, who meets Donald Cerrone at Saturday’s WEC 48 pay-per-view event at ARCO Arena in Sacramento, Calif.

Strikeforce Exec Says “Mayhem” Miller Acted On His Own Should Have Expected Fallout
Posted by: | Comments
While “Strikeforce: Nashville” had a few interesting developments, including Jake Shields’ upset win over Dan Henderson and the historic matchup of champion vs. champion, Saturday night’s event will ultimately be remembered for one thing: the post-fight brawl.
The ugly, CBS-broadcast melee undoubtedly marred what had been a relatively ho-hum night up to that point.
But at the evening’s post-event press conference, Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker made one thing perfectly clear: the organization had nothing to do with Jason “Mayhem” Miller’s presence in the cage. In fact, Coker said Miller should have been able to see the brawl coming.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – According to most MMA pundits, Strikeforce middleweight champion Jake Shields had one path to victory against UFC import Dan Henderson in their main event contest at Saturday’s “Strikeforce: Nashville” event.
Similarly, most felt Henderson had one weapon that could turn the fight in his favor.
But what would happen if both fighters were able to implement their preferred attack? That question was answered at Bridgestone Arena in the final bout of the evening’s CBS-broadcast main card, though the beauty of the performance was marred by some disgusting post-fight antics.

Chael Sonnen Doubts Champ Anderson Silva Will Sign To Fight At UFC 117
Posted by: | Comments
Chael Sonnen is optimistic he’ll get to fight middleweight champion Anderson Silva. But he also says he’s a bit worried that it won’t happen.
“I don’t know if Anderson’s going to accept,” Sonnen told MMAjunkie.com.
UFC president Dana White on Wednesday told Jim Rome that Silva and Sonnen will face off in what would be the champions’s seventh consecutive title defense. But there’s a twist: after another lackluster fight against Demian Maia this past Saturday, Silva must deliver excitement or risk being cut from the organization.

Ed Soares is again stuck between a rock and a hard place.
He understands fans who wish UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva would have finished Demian Maia during the main event of UFC 112. He does, too. He doesn’t excuse the lack of action.
On the other hand, he’s Silva’s friend and manager and has a duty to understand – and to a certain degree, defend – the champion’s actions this past Saturday night at Concert Arena on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Thiago Alves Awaits Medical Clearance Before Jon Fitch Rematch Official For UFC 115
Posted by: | Comments
The Ultimate Fighting Championship today announced the full card for UFC 115. But there’s one loose end that needs to be tied up: Thiago Alves vs. Jon Fitch.
The promotion did not announce the long-awaited rematch because the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board has not yet cleared Alves, who was suspended two days before a scheduled meeting with Fitch at March’s UFC 111 event due to a failed CT scan and subsequent brain surgery, to fight.
Alves will return to New York April 21 to get medical clearance to fight Fitch on June 12. If all goes well, an official UFC announcement will follow.

However, UFC president Dana White initially denied the report and said he instead planned to pit Franklin against Randy Couture. But later, he said fans simply would need to tune into “TUF 11″ to see what happens.

UFC 112 Recap: Anderson Silva Keeps Belt, Loses Fans; Frankie Edgar Scores Massive Upset
Posted by: | Comments
UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva is here to entertain you – or at least himself.
While lightweight Frankie Edgar earned one of the biggest upsets in UFC history with an impressive decision win over champion B.J. Penn in the co-main event of Saturday’s “UFC 112: Invincible” card in Abu Dhabi, Silva did his best to make the night all about “The Spider” in the evening’s main event.
Silva toyed with Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist Demian Maia early but was unable to finish late, and the champion walked away from the UFC’s first event in the Middle East with yet another uninspired victory.

M-1 Global Flatly Denies Any Discussions With UFC President Dana White
Posted by: | Comments
UFC president Dana White has been especially coy in recent interviews when asked to address a potential signing of top heavyweight fighter Fedor Emelianenko.
White’s patented answer is recent weeks has been framed with a wry smile and usually consists of a, “I’ve talked to his people more recently than you would think,” followed with a gaze that suggests he knows far more than he’s willing to let on.
But Emelianenko’s M-1 Global reps remain steadfast in their denial of any contact with White and insist that settling their minor differences with Strikeforce is still goal No. 1.

Riding High On Four-Fight Win Streak, UFC 112’s Terry Etim Welcomes His Toughest Test
Posted by: | Comments
Things didn’t go so well in Terry Etim’s first few UFC appearances.
Despite a “Submission of the Night” win in his UFC debut, the Brit went on to drop two-straight decisions to Gleison Tibau and Rich Clementi.
But since that time, Etim (14-2 MMA, 5-2 UFC) has reeled off four-straight UFC wins and looks to be one of the lightweight division’s most promising prospects. And at Saturday’s UFC 112 event in Abu Dhabi, Etim believes he’ll face his toughest test to date.
