Florian Chokes Gomi In The 3rd!
Posted by: | Comments
Kenny Florian made it two wins out of two since his loss to BJ Penn when he submitted former PRIDE lightweight champ Takanori Gomi in the 3rd round at Ultimate Fight Night 21.
Florian controlled the first two rounds with his lightening fast right jab which seemed to connect on Gomi almost every time he threw it.
It was obvious midway through the first round that Gomi didn’t have an answer for Florian’s jab and with hindsight on our side it was perhaps painfully clear that there was only going to be one winner tonight.
And it wasn’t going to be Gomi.
The end came after Florian shot in and scored a take-down in the third. From there it was only a matter of time until Gomi made a mistake. Said mistake came in the form of Gomi turning into a Florian choke which Ken-Flo subsequently locked in tight forcing the Japanese stand-out to tap.

It’s Official! Kimbo Vs Mitrione At UFC 113
Posted by: | CommentsIt seems that those Internet rumors that suggested Youtube phenom Kimbo Slice would be facing James Toney next were wrong.
The UFC has announced that Kimbo Slice will face Matt Matrione at UFC 113 on May 8th in Montreal.
Anderson Silva: “Vitor Belfort Is Not My Friend!”
Posted by: | Comments
Even though Anderson Silva will not be defending his UFC middleweight title at UFC 112 against fellow Brazilian Vitor Belfort, the champ still couldn’t resist taking a cheap shot at ‘The Phenom’
“First thing, he (Belfort) was never my friend. Second, a fight is fight. I’m here to fight and whoever is better prepared will win and one of us will lose. I’d be upset if I had to face Rodrigo, Rogerio, Feijao, Lyoto or even Wanderlei or Shogun, but Vitor? He’s just another opponent like everyone else.”
Um, okay…
What’s the bet that this fight will never happen?
Dana White Talks About Signing James Toney…
Posted by: | CommentsI woke up this morning and suddenly the world was an entirely different place. I now lived in a world where James “Lights Out” Toney was a friggin UFC Fighter!
Anyway, if we here at Verbal Tap are shocked then you all probably are at the thought of one day seeing Toney fight in the Octagon.
Yahoo sports caught up with Dana White and asked him what they intend to do with James Toney. This is what he had to say…
“To be 100 percent honest with you, all [expletive] aside, I haven’t thought it out. I like James Toney. He’s one of the greatest boxers ever. I have tremendous respect for him. He said he wanted to fight in the UFC and I was interested. Now he’s here and I have to figure out what to do with him. What we won’t do is make a freak show out of it. I’d be the first to scream if someone else did that, so I’m not going to do it. Hey, I don’t want this to be seen as a joke, and it’s not like Herschel Walker or Canseco or any of those guys. James Toney is a fighter. The worst thing anyone can ever say to me is that they were watching one of my fights and they changed the channel. That’s why I’ll never put [expletive] fights on. James is an interesting case. We know how much talent he has as a boxer and he insists he’ll surprise people by how much MMA he knows. I’ve still got some thinking to do … James came to me and he literally chased me around the country to do it, so I’m giving him the chance. We’ll get it figured out one way or another.”

Frankie Edgar: “BJ Penn Is The Most Skilled Fighter In The UFC”
Posted by: | Comments
Sherdog Radio recently caught up with UFC lightweight Frankie Edgar ahead of his UFC 112 title challenge against BJ Penn.
“In my eyes he’s [Penn]one of if not the most skilled fighter in the UFC. He could do it all. He’s probably one of the most well rounded. From standup to the ground, his takedown defense is second to none. His flexibility, balance, all that stuff, he’s going to be a tough nut to crack. I’m going to have my hands full for sure.”
Sounds like Edgar has a lot of respect for Penn’s abilities. But what does he predict will happen at UFC 112?
“It’s going to be in the desert. It’s going to be hot, so we’ll probably be sweating a lot. I predict a lot of sweat. How about that?”
Ricardo Mayorga VS Din Thomas Set For Pay Per View
Posted by: | Comments
Ricardo Mayorga the former two-weight world boxing champion is set to face UFC veteran Din Thomas at the Shine Fights 3 “Worlds Collide” PPV on May 5th.
Mayorga, who has faced almost every boxer of note in his generation from Oscar De La Hoy, Felix Trinidad, Shane Mosley, Vernon Forrest to Corey Spinks will make his MMA debut against Din Thomas who was won all three fights since getting cut by the UFC back in April 2008.
Should be a pretty painful night for Mayorga…
UFC 110 Head To Head – Darren Avery vs Griff – Predictions
Posted by: | CommentsAntonio Minotauro Nogueira VS Cain Velasquez
Darren Avery
A really intriguing, legend versus young pretender matchup, this is Velasquez’ biggest test having dispatched some of the gatekeepers in the Heavyweight Division.
Velasquez is an explosive athlete who makes up for his lack of size at this weight with his tremendous work rate and excellent wrestling. ‘Big Nog’ however is a different animal. His boxing against Couture was outstanding last time out – an area where Velasquez struggled against Cheick Kongo – and if taken down he also has excellent submissions even off his back.
A learning curve for Velasquez, I think Nogueira’s experience and skill set will be just too much for him at this stage in his career.
Result – Nogueira via submission
Griff
I don’t think that this fight is going to be as close as most people think. The simple reality of this matchup is that one fighter is on the way up while the other is on a sharp decline.
Let’s not get too carried away with Nog’s win over Randy Couture, sure it was impressive but I don’t think that result will factor into tonight’s fight at all.
Against Velasquez, Nogueira finds himself up against a freak of nature. The way Velasquez man-handled bigger men in Kongo and Rothwell is perhaps a good indication of how this fight will play out.
If Kongo and Rothwell, two heavyweight giants, couldn’t keep Velasquez from throwing them around like ragdolls then what chance does Nogueria have?
In my opinion; none.
Velasquez is an intelligent wrestler, he’s simply too smart to get caught by an armbar or whatever Nogueira tries to pull out of his admittedly deep bag of tricks. I see a referee stoppage here.
Result – Velasquez via TKO
Wanderlei Silva VS Michael Bisping
Darren Avery
Really exciting matchup and two fighters with much to prove, with the legendary ‘Axe Murderer’ at 1-3 in his last 4 UFC fights and Bisping still trying to win over those who say he doesn’t belong in the upper echelons of this division.
In the Bisping corner there’s the argument that a fighter as durable as him could give Silva problems by sticking and moving as he did against Leben. He can then score points with takedowns if the fight goes any distance, especially as Wanderlei is fighting at Middleweight for the first time and the weight cut may affect his gas tank and power.
The biggest issue for me though, is that Wanderlei doesn’t fear Bispings power – and this lends itself to his almost reckless striking style and relentless openings. He’s worked with a lot of big wrestling based fighters such as King Mo Lawal in his camp for this fight so his takedown defence should be sound – i just see a fast start and a fast finish.
Result – Silva via TKO
Griff
I hate having to pick against one of my favourite fighters but I’m afraid that after the way Bisping’s been talking about his plans to trade bombs with Silva I’m going to have to go with a TKO win for The Axe Murderer on this one.
Sure, Bisping could be lying and his plans could actually be to outscore Silva in much the same way he did against Chris Leben but a big part of me thinks that after the way Bisping got knocked out by Henderson at UFC 100, he’ll want to prove to himself that that KO was a fluke.
And therein lies the problem.
Fuelled by a misplaced sense of bravado I think Bisping will go head hunting and to head hunt against Wanderlei Silva means that your head has to be within range of Silva’s windmills.
I see this fight ended early, very early. Silva will have little if no respect for Bisping’s striking and after a brief stand-off period will cut the octagon off and unleash his onslaught.
Result – Silva TKO 1
Joe Stevenson VS George Sotiropoulos
Darren Avery
This is a huge opportunity for Sotiropoulos, fighting perennial contender Stevenson on home soil – a fighter who incidentally has lost on his only two previous fights outside the U.S, here in the U.K. A dangerous submission fighter with an amateur boxing background, I think Sotiropoulos will try to utilise his boxing in the way that Spencer Fisher tried against Stevenson, and rely on his ground game to get him out of trouble if and when he’s taken there.
This is a big step up in quality for Sotiropoulos though and Stevenson has never looked so good since joining Greg Jacksons camp. He himself has worked on his boxing, which is much improved, and he seems more focussed and well rounded than ever right now.
This fight I’m sure will be won on the ground and i expect Joe Daddy to be too strong, imposing his will on his opponent and finishing with some ground and pound.
Result – Stevenson via TKO
Griff
I foresee another with for The Daddy.
I cannot for the life of me see Stevenson slipping up against Sotiropoulos (Man, that’s a hard name to spell). From what I’ve seen of Sotirwhatsisnamopolus he seems a pretty decent fighter who on his day could very well get the nod over Joe but I just can’t see that day being tonight. (does that even make sense?)
Joe Stevenson is on a roll after beating Nate Diaz and Spencer Fisher since dropping back to back defeats to Kenny Florian and Diego Sanchez and you can be confident that Stevenson is not going to lose his momentum against GS.
I expect Stevenson to grind out a solid win.
Result – Stevenson via decision
Ryan Bader VS Keith Jardine
Darren Avery
Another up and comer being given an opportunity to make a name for themselves is TUF 8 winner Ryan Bader.
Up against him is the dangerous, unorthodox striker Keith Jardine who’s aforementioned striking and lethal leg kicks can pose a problem for anyone. I really like Bader though and think he’s a real prospect. He likes to stand, has a decent left jab and a big heavy overhand right reminiscent of Chuck Liddell; he also has a strong college wrestling background having competed alongside headliner Cain Velasquez so if he eats too many leg kicks don’t be surprised to see him shoot for one of those legs.
I can see Bader taking this one, I think his striking is more technical, has heavy hands, and can rely on his wrestling if in trouble.
Result – Bader via decision
Griff
I think this fight will play out almost exactly as the Jardine – Rampage fight back at UFC 96. Jardine will want to keep the fight standing as long as possible and while it does, it will be an extremely tight affair but every now and then Bader will shoot for the takedown and score.
That will be enough for the judges to give the decision to Bader.
Of course, with Jardine, you never know how he’s going to respond to being clipped but I think he’ll be able to utilize his unusual style to keep the fight at range and avoid the haymakers.
Result – Bader via decision
George Sotiropoulos Talks About His UFC 110 Fight With Joe Stevenson
Posted by: | Comments
MMAJunkie caught up with Australian George Sotiropoulos ahead of his UFC 110 fight with former UFC lightweight title challenger Joe “The Daddy” Stevenson on Saturday night.
“It’s pleasing to me to fight in my home country and to perform at a venue like the Acer Arena, but that won’t automatically make me beat Joe Stevenson on Feb. 21. Once I walk into the cage, it’s all irrelevant. The fans can’t enter the octagon with me and fight Stevenson.”
The TUF 6 veteran added that he expects Stevenson to be tough to beat on Saturday night…
“Everybody knows Joe as a guy with very good submissions in his locker and someone who is well-rounded. He’s also pretty tough and durable. He’s got strong wrestling and works the top position very well. He’s proven himself against the best lightweights in the UFC. It’s fair to say he’s no chump.”
So, what will a win over Stevenson do for Sotiropoulos’s career?
“I truly believe people will recognize me as a legitimate top lightweight after this fight. A win over Stevenson will take me further up the ladder and closer to a title shot. That’s what it’s all about for me. I’ve always wanted to climb that ladder and achieve my goal of winning the UFC title.”
Ben Rothwell Talks UFC 110
Posted by: | Comments
Ben Rothwell finds himself in a corner at UFC 110 on Saturday night. Should he lose then it’s conceivable that he’ll be cut from the UFC but should he win then he has a real chance to make a name for himself in MMA’s elite organisation.
His opponent on Saturday is MMA legend Mirko Cro-Cop, a fighter many insiders think is on the decline but not Rothwell…
“He is a tough guy, and people can say what they want about where he’s at. But I’d like to see them get in the ring with him…The guy’s dangerous, there’s no doubt about it, and he’s still got fight in him, so it’s gonna be a good fight and definitely a fight that I want to win.”
Vitor Belfort Out For Up To 8 Months?
Posted by: | Comments
Last week Vitor Belfort had to pull out of his UFC 112 title challenge against Anderson Silva due to a shoulder injury.
Vitor has now revealed the true extent of the injury in an interview with Tatame…
“I went under surgery already. I can’t take too long off, because of my career and physical conditioning. Around eight months [I will be out]. The surgery was great, I’m way better now, but I have to rest. Let’s move on… I’ll work to be better to come back to fight. I had this problem since last year. I felt my shoulder had damage in the fight against Jorge Santiago. Then I did it three more times. I was going to fight Anderson in January, but I kept training hard and the UFC was forced to postpone the fight. We did a MRI and doctor Michel Simoni, one of the best in Brazil and well known overseas, said there was no way, to be 100% I’d have to stop. Now I’ll be back only five months from now.”
Michael Bisping “I’ve Got The Perfect Style To Beat Wanderlei Silva”
Posted by: | Comments
The UK’s Michael Bisping has been talking about his upcoming fight at UFC 110 with Wanderlei Silva on Saturday.
“I believe it’s a very winnable fight for me. I know Wanderlei’s a legend and has been around a long time, but I truly believe styles make fights and that I’ve got the perfect style to beat him,”
Bisping, somewhat less brash than he was ahead of his UFC 100 fight with Dan Henderson added…
“He’s experienced and possesses heavy hands but other than that, I feel I’m way better than him. I know I have the ability to beat him – it’s now just about executing my game plan on the night.”

Wanderlei Silva Plans To Copy Dan Henderson And Beat Michael Bisping At UFC 110
Posted by: | Comments
Wanderlei Silva claims that he will beat Michael Bisping at UFC 110 and that he will have Dan Henderson to thank for it if he does…
“Henderson gave me the way to beat him. I’m going to try to copy Henderson. I know the way to beat Bisping. I have a good game plan.”
Of course, the Bisping we saw in the Henderson fight was not the same fighter who beat Denis Kang, that Bisping concentrated in using his energy and strength to take the fight to the ground. If that Bisping turns up, is the Axe Murderer worried?
“In his head he thinks he’s going to get me with the takedown and want to fight me like he did in the second round with Denis Kang. It’s not going to happen. He’s going to need to fight with me in stand-up. He’s never going to take me to the ground. He has maybe one or two takedowns, a double-leg, and one other takedown. I’ve had a great opportunity to train with real good names, real good friends.”
Damian Maia Set To Face Anderson Silva For UFC Middleweight Title At UFC 112
Posted by: | Comments
The UFC have confirmed that Damian Maia will challenge Anderson Silva for the UFC middleweight title at UFC 112.
Dana White is adamant that Silva defend the title at UFC 112 in April despite the withdrawal of challenger Vitor Belfort with a shoulder injury.
It was thought that Chael Sonnen would get the next shot at Anderson Silva’s belt but due to the cut he suffered during his decision victory over Nate Marquardt at UFC 109, he is unable to fight again so soon.
Maia however, holds a submission victory over Sonnen though himself got stopped by Nate Marquardt only two fights ago.
Efrain Escudero To Face Dan Lauzon At UFC 114?
Posted by: | Comments
It looks like Ultimate Fighter season 8 winner Efrain Escudero (12-1) will face Dan Lauzon at UFC 114.
The UFC are eyeing the matchup for the Memorial Day weekend card which will take place on May 29th, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Escudero will be returning to the Octagon after losing his unbeaten record to Evan Dunham at UFN 20.
Lauzon (13-3) is also looking to rebound from a loss after losing to Cole Miller.
UFC – Tim Hague Cut After UFC 109 Loss
Posted by: | CommentsAfter losing to Chris Tuchscherer at UFC 109, Tim Hague has been cut from the UFC.
Hague hopes to return to the UFC one day and is seeing this setback as the perfect way to improve his all-round game…
“(It’s) time to train harder, beat up some more people and work back to the big show,”
