Florian Chokes Gomi In The 3rd!

Kenny Florian made it two wins out of two since his loss to BJ Penn when he submitted former PRIDE lightweight champ Takanori Gomi in the 3rd round at Ultimate Fight Night 21.

Florian controlled the first two rounds with his lightening fast right jab which seemed to connect on Gomi almost every time he threw it.

It was obvious midway through the first round that Gomi didn’t have an answer for Florian’s jab and with hindsight on our side it was perhaps painfully clear that there was only going to be one winner tonight.

And it wasn’t going to be Gomi.

The end came after Florian shot in and scored a take-down in the third. From there it was only a matter of time until Gomi made a mistake. Said mistake came in the form of Gomi turning into a Florian choke which Ken-Flo subsequently locked in tight forcing the Japanese stand-out to tap.

It seems that those Internet rumors that suggested Youtube phenom Kimbo Slice would be facing James Toney next were wrong.

The UFC has announced that Kimbo Slice will face Matt Matrione at UFC 113 on May 8th in Montreal.

Even though Anderson Silva will not be defending his UFC middleweight title at UFC 112 against fellow Brazilian Vitor Belfort, the champ still couldn’t resist taking a cheap shot at ‘The Phenom’

“First thing, he (Belfort) was never my friend. Second, a fight is fight. I’m here to fight and whoever is better prepared will win and one of us will lose. I’d be upset if I had to face Rodrigo, Rogerio, Feijao, Lyoto or even Wanderlei or Shogun, but Vitor? He’s just another opponent like everyone else.”

Um, okay…

Dana White Talks About Signing James Toney…

I woke up this morning and suddenly the world was an entirely different place. I now lived in a world where James “Lights Out” Toney was a friggin UFC Fighter!

Anyway, if we here at Verbal Tap are shocked then you all probably are at the thought of one day seeing Toney fight in the Octagon.

Yahoo sports caught up with Dana White and asked him what they intend to do with James Toney. This is what he had to say…

“To be 100 percent honest with you, all [expletive] aside, I haven’t thought it out. I like James Toney. He’s one of the greatest boxers ever. I have tremendous respect for him. He said he wanted to fight in the UFC and I was interested. Now he’s here and I have to figure out what to do with him. What we won’t do is make a freak show out of it. I’d be the first to scream if someone else did that, so I’m not going to do it. Hey, I don’t want this to be seen as a joke, and it’s not like Herschel Walker or Canseco or any of those guys. James Toney is a fighter. The worst thing anyone can ever say to me is that they were watching one of my fights and they changed the channel. That’s why I’ll never put [expletive] fights on. James is an interesting case. We know how much talent he has as a boxer and he insists he’ll surprise people by how much MMA he knows. I’ve still got some thinking to do … James came to me and he literally chased me around the country to do it, so I’m giving him the chance. We’ll get it figured out one way or another.”

Ben Rothwell VS Gilbert Yvel Set For UFC 115?

It seems that while both Mirko Cro Cop and Ben Rothwell are scheduled to fight at UFC 115 in Vancouver, Canada, it won’t be against each other.

Cro Cop is being lined up to face Pat Barry while Ben Rothwell, who had to pull out of his scheduled UFC 112 fight with Cro Cop due to illness will face veteran Gilbert Yvel.

Last time out Yvel got stopped by Junior Dos Santos while Rothwell found himself on the wrong side of a Cain Velasquez mauling.
